Cooking Basics Men Should Master

Cooking is one of the most essential life skills every man should learn. In order to become good in this area, your curiosity and persistence are needed because cooking takes time and effort. At the start, failure can be expected, so being consistent to the task is necessary.

If you are a beginner, there’s no need to master so many dishes, but you can start learning the basics. The first thing is to make sure you have the basic cooking utensils and equipment you need such as a fry pan, saucepan, knives, cutting board, etc. You also need to buy basic ingredients such as eggs, cooking oil, spices, flour, condiments, pasta, rice, cheese, and vegetables. Once you have the basics, you can start preparing your own food until you are satisfied with the taste.

To help you up your game in the kitchen, here are some of the few basic dishes that you can start creating at home.

1. Eggs

Eggs are some of the easiest food to prepare and they can be cooked in different ways. Know your loved one’s preference in eggs and prepare a nice egg meal for them when they visit your place. Below are some of the ways on how to cook eggs.

Hard boiled eggs

This is probably the easiest to prepare and a no-brainer. Just make sure that the eggs are properly cooked before you remove them from the pan as you don’t want to eat a raw egg.

Fried eggs

There are two things you can make when frying an egg: the sunny side up or the scrambled eggs.

A sunny side up is an egg cooked only on one side which means there is no need to flip. It is named the way it is because it looks like a sun when viewed from the top, egg yolk in the middle surrounded by the white part of the egg.

On the other hand, scrambled eggs are cooked by stirring the egg yolk and the white together before frying.


Omelets are basically like the scrambled egg mixed with other ingredients such as meat, veggies, or cheese.

Poached eggs

Poached eggs are boiled eggs without the shell. This is quite complicated to make because there are times when the eggs just scatter around. But there are tricks on how to make perfect poached eggs.

2. Pancakes

Aside from eggs, pancakes are also very easy to prepare. In addition, pancakes are perfect anytime of the day whether you want it for breakfast or for dinner.

There are ready made pancake mixes available in the market so there is no need to do your own mixture. Another best thing about pancakes is that you can customize them to your liking. You can add fruits like bananas, blueberries, strawberries or even chocolate chips. To complete the recipe, you can add chocolate or maple syrup.

3. Sandwiches

Sandwiches are not only delicious, they are also very easy to make. The best thing about sandwiches is that there is a wide array of flavors and ingredients than you can use. For instance, you can make a grilled cheese sandwich, a tuna sandwich, an egg sandwich, a clubhouse, etc.

The most common type of sandwich everybody loves is grilled cheese. To make this, you only need to prepare bread, cheese of your choice, butter, and a sandwich maker. If you want to add a twist to your cheese sandwich you can add bacon, ham slices, or anything that would satisfy your palate. 

Another favorite is the tuna salad sandwich. To prepare this, you must have bread, tuna, mayonnaise, and some spices. To spice up the flavor even more you may add a bit of lemon and celery.

If you are into healthier options, you can choose whole wheat or all grain bread over white bread. Whole wheat breads have lower calorie count and fiber which can greatly improve your digestive health and help you reduce the risks of diabetes and heart diseases.

4. Salad

Just like sandwiches, salads offer a wide variety of flavors to choose from. Some of the ingredients that you can use when doing this dish are meat, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and a hundred types of homemade dressings.

The best thing about salads is that there is no cooking required, only a simple preparation like slicing and mixing the ingredients. In some cases, baking the ingredients is necessary but not mandatory.

This one is self-explanatory – get some lettuce (romaine is one of our favorites), dice some fresh vegetables to toss in, and add your favorite salad dressing. Top it off with some freshly grated cheese and bam! A delicious salad that makes you look like a pro.

5. Pasta

With pasta, there are also a lot of dishes that you can make. The most common are the following: spaghetti, pesto, lasagna, aglio olio, carbonara, etc.

Pasta is easy to cook. Roughly 10-20 minutes of preparation, you can already make a good pasta dish. It can also be eaten either warm or cold. Plus, it will take a long time to spoil pasta dishes; hence, you can just reheat your leftovers and avoid any food wastes.

With so many pasta dishes to choose from, you’ll be well served by researching which one you want to try. Will it be a red wine sauce? Or maybe a creamy white sauce like a bacon carbonara. No matter which way you slice it, pasta is a super simple dish to create, and goes awesome with a slice of cheesy garlic bread and a glass of red wine. Throw in a candle lit table for two, and you’ll be well on your way to scoring big points 🙂

Being good in cooking and preparing dishes is a process you won’t learn overnight. Start with basic dishes, watch some tutorials, and most importantly, keep practicing until you are able to perfect one or two dishes. As days go by and as you get the hang of it, you will eventually learn to cook more dishes, even those that require an intricate process.
